What are “Unknown” candidates in the Gender Report?

Unlike other models, the Datapeople model uses the 'Unknown' gender category to capture instances where a first-name-based prediction is going to be too close to call. This population is labeled ‘Unknown’ in our charts and tables.

This specifically impacts:

  • Candidates with gender-neutral names: These are names like Alex, Mel, Kim or Min that have a high probability of being used by both male and female candidates.
  • Cases where candidate data has been deleted or anonymized. This can be in relation to GDPR or other privacy regulations or other candidate blinding software.
