Job Board Salary Optimization

Recently, job boards including LinkedIn and Indeed have shared guidelines on formatting salaries in job postings. Salary guidelines help job boards recognize that salaries are included in job postings. The consequence of misformatting can be significant: job postings that do not have salaries formatted in compliance with job board guidelines result are not syndicated to job boards (if they are based in locations that require salary disclosure in job postings), resulting in wasteful ad/promotion spend and few job seekers finding your jobs.

We’ve developed a piece of guidance that detects whether or not the salary in a job description is formatted according to standards set by LinkedIn and Indeed. When formatting salary, keep in mind these four components that salaries should comply with:

  • Salary Keywords
  • Currency
  • Range
  • Pay Periods

Salary Keywords

Include keywords that indicate the presence of a salary. Position these keywords close to the salary to help job boards detect and extract salaries from job descriptions.

  • Pay: From $35.00 per hour
  • Compensation: $43-$48/ hour
  • A base salary of $100,000 - $110,000 gross per year, plus a competitive commission structure.

Some common keywords that indicate the presence of a salary include:

  • Salary
  • Pay
  • Compensation
  • Income
  • Wage
  • Remuneration

Currency

Specify the currency of the salary using the symbol of the currency ($, £, €) or currency code (USD, GBP, EUR). Currency symbols should directly precede the salary number, while currency codes can be positioned directly before or after the salary number.

  • The salary for this role is 110,000 EUR per year.
  • Pay: $52,921.00 - $95,192.00 per year.
  • The median salary for the role is £117,500 per year.

Examples of currency symbols and codes include:

  • $, USD (US Dollar)
  • £, GBP (UK Pound Sterling)
  • €, EUR (Euro)
  • A$ (Australian Dollar)
  • C$, CAD (Canadian Dollar)

Range

If a salary is presented as a range, include a dash (“-”) to connect the low and high end of the range, rather than using an operative word like ‘to’ or ‘between’. Ensure that the numbers in the range share the same currency and pay period. For example, don’t include both an hourly compensation with an annual compensation in a range.

  • The salary range for the role is 110,000 - 125,000 GBP per year.
  • Salary range: $110,000-$125,000 per year.

Ranges can include spaces between dashes and numbers or can exclude spaces:

  • $110,000 - $125,000
  • $110,000-$125,000

Pay Periods

Clarify the time period for which compensation is offered. Include keywords with the job description’s salary that indicate over what period of time pay will be provided.

  • The expected base salary for this role in New York, New York will range from $100,000 - $120,000 per year.
  • Salary is up to 150000 USD annually.
  • Salary is $10 - $15/hour.

Examples of keywords include:

  • Per day
  • Yearly
  • Annually
  • Per annum
  • Per year
  • Hourly
  • Per month
  • Per hour
  • / hour
