Overqualified Jobs

Overqualified roles occur when the content of the job description doesn't match the talent market. There are two ways in which jobs can be overqualified:

  • Title inflation: Giving it a title that seems more senior than the requirements imply.
  • Uncalibrated requirements: Asking for non-standard requirements or responsibilities that don’t fit the job market.

For example, a tech job in San Francisco, where the candidate pool is large and differentiated, can ask for different requirements than a tech job in Boise.

Why are over-qualified jobs bad?

Overqualifying a role can deter qualified candidates from applying. We see this primarily in a smaller candidate pool. For example, overqualified roles tend to attract fewer women.
